Entering Soil Layer Data

In full-screen mode, the Soil Layer data entry is located at the bottom of the screen.  In compact mode, select the "Data" button as shown below.

Make sure the "Soil Layers and Sublayers" tab is selected, and then click anywhere in the grid to open the soil layer entry screen.

The only required fields are the top depth and boundary type.

Layer Depth(s)

Enter the top depth of the current layer in the "Top" field.  For thin (bracketed) layers, a bottom depth is also required.  For all other boundary types, the bottom depth field is disabled.

Boundary Type

There are several boundary types available.  Most are self explanatory:
Known
Prints as a solid line
Inferred
Prints as a dashed line
Queried
Prints as a dashed line with question marks ("?") between the dashes.
Thin Layer
Prints as a bracket, }
Minor Change
A simple arrow at the point of change
Tick at Left
A simple tick mark to the left
No Boundary
No boundary change noted
Bottom of Boring
Prints as a solid line

Material Type

The material type can be entered by either using the pulldown selection list, or by typing the material type directly into the entry field.  Note that when typing, valid material types will be displayed beneath your typing.

The material type will be printed in the Material Graphic Symbol column, and will also be used to determine the hatch pattern used in the Graphic Log column.

BorinGS comes with standard USCS soil definitions.  To define more material types, please see the Editing Materials section.

Material Description

If desired, enter a description of the layer to be printed in the Material Description column.  The font and text style can be modified using the tags described in the Markup Tags section.

Consistency and Color

Any consistency text will be printed in the Consistency column.

The color is used to override any standard colors for the hatch patterns printed in the Graphic Log column.  If a color is entered, it will be used for the entire hatch pattern.  If white is selected, the predefined colors will be used (selecting white will allow the default colors to be printed).

Font Size

Normally the column's default font size is appropriate for the material description.  In certain cases, however, a smaller or larger font size may be required.  Use this field to change the font size of a single description.
